More product information : One of the biggest landmarks in India, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of enduring love: to this day, newlyweds visit the Taj Mahal since, according to the Indian custom, it is believed to preserve marital bliss. The Taj Mahal was built as a mausoleum in Agra in 1631 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his deceased wife, a Persian princess named Mumtaz Mahal. This construction was to be the last major task in his life. The huge project occupied more than 20,000 workers for almost two decades. The building, the colours of which range from brilliant white to golden, appeals above all for its perfect symmetry. The tremendous detail only becomes apparent after longer observation. The facade of the Taj Mahal is made of white marble with ornamentation of semi-precious stones, sapphires and diamonds. Over 1000 elephants carried all the materials for the complex from all over Asia. The calligraphic suras from the Koran at the four entrances to the main building are particularly impressive. According to one legend, the stonemason's hands were cut off in order to preserve the uniqueness of the Taj Mahal.
